BOTOX® Cosmetic and Dysport® are popular non-surgical facial rejuvenation injectables for adult women and men who desire an effective and temporary solution to fine lines, wrinkles, forehead furrows and creases.
If you are self-conscious about the appearance of crow’s feet, forehead creases, or frown lines, BOTOX® injections are an excellent temporary non-surgical cosmetic solution for you. BOTOX® injections work very well for individuals who are not ready for a surgical procedure. However, many patients use BOTOX® and dermal fillers to enhance their facial surgical results. Dr. Peña can discuss your options in greater detail during your initial consultation.
What is BOTOX® Cosmetic
BOTOX® Cosmetic is a safe and effective neurotoxin, specially formulated to act on the underlying facial muscles. It is comprised of diluted botulinum toxin, a neuromuscular toxin which is used to block nerve impulses to stop muscle contractions and reduce the appearance of frown lines. BOTOX® is safe for cosmetic facial rejuvenation and has been FDA-approved for use in the US since 2002. BOTOX® Cosmetic effectively prevents the forehead from creasing for periods of three months or more.* Dr. Peña will customize your dosage of the BOTOX® Cosmetic injections to achieve optimal results for you.
BOTOX® can be used to temporarily improve your severe underarm sweating (hyperhidrosis). BOTOX® (onabotulinumtoxinA) has been approved for the treatment of axillary hyperhidrosis in both men and women, and can provide relief from this condition even in the hot and humid climate of Southwest Florida.
Am I a Good Candidate for BOTOX® Cosmetic?
If you are unhappy with the way your face has aged or you feel your expressions are causing unattractive facial lines you may be a good candidate for BOTOX® Cosmetic injections. They have a demonstrated low risk of side effects and have been safely used on millions of men and women throughout the US. Dr. Peña will discuss your facial renewal goals and together you’ll decide on which areas of the face that should be treated.
How Does BOTOX® Cosmetic Work?
BOTOX® Cosmetic works by temporarily interrupting the nerve signals that cause muscle tension. By interrupting nerve signals, BOTOX® Cosmetic allows your treated facial muscles to relax, resulting in a flattening of the overlying skin and a noticeable reduction in the appearance of fine lines and deep wrinkles.
Some individuals believe that because BOTOX® is promoted in spas and other non-medical settings that that all injectors are the same. This is not true! Education, injection technique, skill, and experience matter. Also, if you see ad for “cheap” BOTOX®, beware! Be sure to make certain you are receiving authentic BOTOX® injections and in the quantities promised (units). Also, make sure you ask for “BOTOX® Cosmetic” by name.
What Areas of the Face Does BOTOX® Cosmetic Treat?
BOTOX® Cosmetic has proven effective at treating fine lines and wrinkles throughout the face. Common areas for BOTOX® treatment include the forehead, in between the eye brows, around the eyes, and marionette lines or downturned corners of the mouth. Where you will most benefit from BOTOX® treatment is best determined by expert injector, Dr. Manuel Peña.
How is BOTOX® Cosmetic Injected?
The precise injection of BOTOX® Cosmetic is as follows:
- A topical anesthetic cream is applied to “freeze” the areas to be treated and iced compress to minimize any discomfort or possibility of bruising!
- Dr. Peña will inject a precise pre-determined amount of BOTOX® solution into your problem areas. The treatment time will vary for each patient.
- Normal activities can be resumed right away, although you will be discouraged from resting in a horizontal position for several hours following injection. You will be asked to avoid rubbing the injection site as well. Rigorous activities may be restricted for about 24 hours.
How Long Does BOTOX® Cosmetic Last?
Neuromodulators take 2 days to 2 weeks to have a full effect. The typical BOTOX® injection can produce results for up to 5 months.* Your results will depend on factors such as your lifestyle choices and age at the time of injections, but it is uncommon for results to last for a substantially longer amount of time. However, maintaining BOTOX® results is simple, requiring additional visits to our office for touchup injections.
How Frequently Can I Have BOTOX® Cosmetic Injections?
There is no limit to the frequency with which you can receive BOTOX® Cosmetic injections. Some people choose to come back to our office for a touch up as soon as lines begin to reappear. Others may choose to wait until the effects of their last treatment have faded entirely. Generally, the intervals are between 3 months and 5 months but some choose to treat only 2 times a year. The frequency with which you receive injections is left up to the decision reached by you and Dr. Peña.
