Excessive sweating is a common experience when the weather is hot and humid or when we’re nervous before a big presentation or performance. But for some, excessive underarm sweat is a constant problem that affects all aspects of daily life. Hyperhidrosis, or excessive sweating, is a benign disorder in that poses no danger to a person’s health. However, it can have huge implications on a person’s quality of life and social well-being. Luckily, there are a variety of treatment options for relief available on the market today.
Botulinum toxin (BOTOX® or Dysport®) can be used to decrease this embarrassing problem. Small injections of these medicines, directly under the skin at the level of the sweat glands and overactive producing glands of the under arms, will stop the production of sweat and odor for up to a year.* It is FDA-approved for the treatment of primary axillary hyperhidrosis.
The Iodine/Cornstarch Test:
The “Starch Test” is sometimes performed to view where the affected areas of perspiration are located. After pinning the underarm areas with Betadine solution the patient will allow it to dry. Cornstarch is then sprinkled on these areas and the patient is asked to walk around or just simply go to an area where perspiration is encouraged. Soon the perspiration triggers a reaction that turns the sweat producing areas black. The area to be treated is then outlined. The iodine cornstarch is then wiped off with either alcohol for the injection treatment, or with an antiseptic solution for the ThermiDry procedure.
