Hair thinning and hair loss is a common condition that is in part a result of the natural aging process. For many men and women, thinning hair and/or bald spots are a source of embarrassment. However, with advanced medical technology, you no longer need to be embarrassed by your bald spot and/or finding ways to cover up your head with caps, hats or wigs.
Dr. Manuel Peña is committed to using the latest non-surgical cosmetic technology to address face, body, and hair restoration concerns. He is experienced and specialized in performing a wide spectrum of innovative cosmetic procedures, including hair restoration treatments using microneedling techniques with platelet-rich plasma (PRP).
“Dr. Peña is always very professional, employing the latest technologies with a well-informed staff. Best of all, he has a warm demeanor and takes his time to explain and perform procedures.” - Ashley D. (Google Review)Read More Reviews
What is Microneedling with PRP?
Originally microneedling was performed with needles of varying lengths on a roller. These were replaced by battery-operated hand-held “microneedling” pens that were created based on tattoo machines. The purpose of the needle punctures was to stimulate wound healing, trigger collagen loss and production, and to enhance skin remodeling.
After the introduction of the “micro-pens,” topical agents were added to increase rejuvenation. Research showed that after having the treatment done, the procedure channels were open for a short time allowing delivery of products and substances to the deep (active) layers of the skin called the deep dermis. These areas happen to be where the hair follicles are. At first, only antioxidant vitamins such as topical Vitamin A and Vitamin C were used, then bleaching agents (Hydroquinones and Kojic Acid) were added to the list of treatment compounds.
With increasing clinical research in the field of regenerative medicine, researchers have found that the single most active post-procedure topical is autologous platelet-rich plasma (PRP). This utilizes a specific part of your own blood to “supercharge” the healing process. The platelets contain proteins (growth factors) that act as messengers to get the body to deliver “repair materials” to the area your treating. The combination of micro-needling plus PRP has been found effective in repairing sun damaged skin, acne scarring, surgical scars, burn scars, hyper, and hypopigmentation, as well as crinkly skin and fine lines.
Recently studies have also shown that this combination is particularly helpful with stimulating hair growth in certain types of thinning hair conditions. We are now combining this with a natural acellular matrix (ACELL) that when injected with the Platelet Rich Plasma it allows the PRP to stay where it was injected (near the hair follicles) so they can deliver the stimulating growth factors more effectively.
How is Microneedling with PRP Performed?
The procedure begins with a small amount of your blood that is drawn at Peña Plastic Surgery. The blood is then rapidly spun in a centrifuge to separate the PRP from the rest of your blood. To minimize discomfort, a topical anesthetic cream is administered to the area that will be treated. Some patients choose to have the area totally numbed with local anesthesia injections.
Rosa (our nurse who performs this procedure) then injects your plasma directly into your scalp with a specialized microneedling device to stimulate renewed blood supply and proper nutrients to your deprived hair follicles. The benefit of the microneedling technique allows for deeper penetration of PRP, amplifying the benefits of your hair restoration procedure.
Depending on the area treated, treatment can take 60 to 90 minutes. Several treatments may be needed for the best possible results, and treatments should be spaced 3 to 6 months apart.* Since PRP is derived from your own blood cells, there is limited risk for an allergic reaction or other adverse effects. Expect mild swelling and minimal soreness for a few days post procedure.
We also recommend the use of hair follicle supporting nutrients and vitamins which are included in the Nutrafol family of supplements (available at La Piel Spa).
